Basing Musical Life on Basses
When I think about my musical life, a lot of it can be traced back through the instruments I own. And I’ve owned nothing longer than bass guitars, my first of which was a 1977 Rickenbacker 4001 I got in the ’90s.
I can kind of figure out what I was trying to do and who I was trying to be through these instruments as well. It’s amazing to see. It’s like a totally different guy when you consider the synths.
The first bass I ever fell in love with was a Rickenbacker 4001 that was blue with googly eyes all over it. It was fretless. A friend of mine, Chad, owned it, and I really did love that bass. That’s how I fell in love with Rickenbackers in the first place.
And that’s never left me.
It’s interesting, because when you look at the basses, the most refined kind of musical line of mine is through these. My synths are all over the place, and so are the guitars-a little bit. But that’s even sharpening up over the years.
I’m going to try to sit down with each of these basses and figure out what they’ve got to say.
Perfect blog material for those days that are stumping me.
