JD Torian

Eddie, the artiste?

Starting to think about solo shows again. Covers, events, acoustic guitar, with some electronic elements. And the easiest way to do this is going to be with a Push or some kind of MPC.

I’m thinking my original MPC Key 37, the red one. It’s light, super easy to operate, and sounds great. So, awesome.

But this made me think of something. I’ve always wanted to do; a design on the audience-facing rear panel. The obvious thing (to me) is some kind of Eddie Van Halen thing because the red is correct. Although I think he started with a white base—doesn’t matter, JD. I can figure out how to make it look good.

But it occurred to me, and it’s occurred to me several times, that he really has not been acknowledged for adding an instantly recognizable piece of art to the world.

How in the, as a guitarist, can you be recognized for a wholly unique paint job? So much so that it’s trademarked. Like, you can’t just steal it or sell it in that regard.

Besides everything he did for music, which I would argue was largely accomplished by 1984, even though I’m a fan of the Sammy Hagar years. It’s different.

He’s obviously lacking no credit in the guitar department, but in the art department, he’s lacking a huge amount of credit.

And I would say that people who don’t even know his music recognize the spray-painted stripes motif.

So can we all, today, give it up for Eddie, the artiste?
