Everything Except Music
So I’ve talked about it here before, but in high school, we—senior year—won a Battle of the Bands in a mall, which, as I described, was as ‘80s as possible. I mean, you can’t get more ’80s than that.
So after high school, there were a few of us who came up to UT, University of Texas, to go to school, and we had a jam in a storage unit, which is the worst kind of jam, no matter what. It’s just awful anyway.
I pulled up in my Honda Accord, a little fat. Half of an Afro. Just in pure college loser mode, smoking, thinking I was the coolest thing since sliced bread.
And all attitude, zero skill, zero ability. No idea what to do, and it was the worst.
It’s the kind of thing I think about and get cold sweats.
Everything except music was what I showed up with.
The reason I’m reminded of this today is I think I showed up with the opposite of that on Friday.
We worked really hard, and we sold 200 tickets to this show, and it was great. Everybody had fun. I played pretty well. I think I’d give myself a high B.
And no rock and roll bullshit, right? Just there to play and have fun, and take it easy.
And that’s what we did.
I enjoy the Buckdancer’s Choice band for its just kind of being about the music and friends and having a good time. I hope it stays that way. There’s things coming up where it may not, but, you know, at some point, I just hope that wasn’t the peak, and I hope there’s more to come from the band.
’Cause it was super fun.
And I think everybody, to a large part, was the same. No bravado. No this or that, just playing a gig, trying to do the best you can.
Because at 55, it’s not about the looks anymore.
That’s for sure.
