Is It Dumb to Be in a Band?

I don’t know where I heard it, but it’s proven to be true. The quote being, “Bands are for kids.”

A friend of mine called wanting some advice on his band. And never has the quote “There’s nothing new under the sun” ever been more prevalent.

I think you get in a band for a lot of reasons. But surely the main reason is that you think you are right. And no matter what, that’s the driving force behind every possible decision made. Trust me in this. In all the bands that you’ve heard of, someone has acquiesced and made the right decision. So you’ve heard of them.

And somewhere in between lazy and letting the wrong person win is why you’ve never heard of all the other bands.

I think at some point, if you work hard enough, you can write a song that’s listenable. Or if you also work hard enough, you can get people to shows and get something going.

In a lot of cases, the best bands are not the most popular bands.

But still, you have to negotiate all the stuff if you’re in a band. And by negotiate, I mean you have to move in and out of it. And someone’s always gonna win the argument, and then you’re off in a direction.

Even in the happiest bands, these things happen.

Which is why you need to fake it until you actually enjoy being in the moment, even these dumb ones.

I’ve seen enough of it to where I don’t care. I don’t care about winning. In fact, I’ve developed a real curiosity to see how things will go when the direction I advocated for is not followed.

Which is basically always.

Then you have to be a bigger person and not take satisfaction when that shizz doesn’t work.

And after all of this, if you think it’s a good idea to be in a band, I’m here to tell you it is.

Because it’s way better than not being in a band.

Which is only slightly less dumber than being in a band.
