Montessori Samplers?
The first time I ever had an SP-404 sampler in my house, I borrowed it from one of the guys in Edie Brickell's band. The utility guy, as fate would have it.
It was so fascinating to go through and hear the samples that they had.
They were mainly atmospheric, and they were clearly homemade, nothing off the shelf. And to sit there and deconstruct what they were, and then imagine how they used them. What song is this for? A weird and cool part of the learning process.
It's like some kind of weird Montessori school for sampling.
I've really had a lot of fun prepping for this variety show, going through the '70s as I remember them, specifically the year '77. There's some amazing music. Playlist here.
While the show is punk-based—or punk-leaning—the real magic comes in inserting the cheese in the right spots. You don't want to get too memba berries. Like, you can't use the commercial, "Mikey likes it."
It's too obvious.
But there's a bunch of hilarious and very serious Oscar Mayer commercials out there. So while it takes some digging and work, it's worth it.
This is just one of those shows where the pay does not come close to equaling the job, but it's all super-satisfying work. Soul pay is always better than $$. Mostly.
And pulling the right samples and knowing these guys and trying to make them laugh and screwing them up and all kinds of stuff like that.
When I was a younger/ aspiring, I did not know that jobs like this existed.
