Musical Planes?

When I’m doomscrolling, I think a lot about these people who are making music on planes. Or on trains. Where they’ve bought something like a battery-powered MPC or something else, and they are filming themselves making a sik beat somewhere where you normally wouldn’t make a sik beat.

And then they get maybe a 5-second kind of forward by the brand that makes these machines.

Time and money spent on doing this just kind of makes me sad for that person.

Because, as we all know, rich or poor, everyone is on their phones whenever you’re on a plane. Or a train or anything like that.

My protest is to bring an e-book. And as I’m on a small trip right now, I would say I’ve been somewhat successful.

The whole point is, if you’re in an airport or something and playing games or making music on your phone, that’s fine. If you are using an instrument, or something like a Wii to play games, you look like an idiot.

That’s just the way things are.

Unless you’re filming it. Which, then you’re doing something different, but then you are in this meta world of looking even dumber. Filming yourself doing something that’s ridiculous in the first place.

I have a busy October. Have a rehearsal and a gig this week, and then two or three things a week through the end of the month.

About to get crazy around here, so a break from music is good.

And that’s what I’m taking on this short trip. A time to try to not think about it. Except in an organizational way. But for sure not making any music.

It’s actually OK to give yourself a break from making music.

You don’t have to always be hustling. Or in the flow. Or taking out your MPC on a flight.

It’s inelegant.

And worst of all, I think it can, in no way, lead to anything approaching listenable.
