Sell the Expensive Stuff
When I was working retail in college, the lady I worked for gave me a piece of advice: Sell the expensive stuff.
With this in mind, and also with the product I’m delivering, I’m cranking my DJ prices: typically starting around $700 and ending up around $1,200, depending on the event, the work, the setup, and all that good stuff.
I’ll still cut deeply for charitable stuff. And I may just show up at your house and set up in your backyard for no particular reason for free.
This was a kind of tough move, but I’ve finally convinced myself of the value. And I’ve had enough people tell me my prices weren’t high enough.
Just over this past month, I really feel like the product has gone from good to great.
I’m always listening to music. Always finding new songs. Always finding old songs.
Systems are built and in the flow.
There comes a time when you have to make the choice to get serious. And that seems to be happening across my musical life, which is great.
It’s both what I’ve asked for and what I’ve been working towards.
And this is all because of what I keep saying: You gotta have gigs. If you don’t, nothing will keep happening.
Your dog isn’t going to grow your fan base. Or your cat. Certainly not your spouse or your kids.
So get on it.
