The Levels of Not Giving a Shit in Your 50s are Insane
I was on a day job call the other day, and we were talking about doing deals. A guy I’m doing work for told me that I needed to get this deal closed so I could get all that money in my retirement account.
This was clearly a potshot at my age.
So okay, fine. I’ll get that deal closed , but I’m not about to retire.
Never in my life, at 55, would I have thought that I could legitimately do music as a career. As a third career, if I wanted to.
But I could.
And that is so freeing. It allows you to take comments like that and literally not give a shit.
And same with the music. If you’ve got a decent day job, you can not take a gig or just quit a band because you’re not going to deal with a bunch of drama, whatever.
The level of not giving a shit in your 50s is for real.
You kind of realize that the real world didn’t exist after all, and what the hell happened between your hilarious 20s and now?
A lot of people I know are trying to orchestrate a return to those kind of carefree days. I guess I’m way ahead of them.
Several people have come up to me lately at gigs telling me that I should do this as my job-job, and it looks like I’m having a good time.
And maybe it’s on my mind because I had three pretty great gigs this weekend. Well, two really good gigs and one for-the-future gig.
Things are working.
When it works, do more. When it doesn’t, do less.
That’s like one of two rules in building a career or business or anything.
The other is: nothing’s ever as good or as bad as you think it is.
Just use those two rules and you’ll be great.
Happy Sunday.
