Three Hours Without Looking at My Watch
Saw Grateful Shred in Austin, Texas, at the Historic Scoot Inn. Actually, I don’t know why it’s historic. I was thinking of it as a newer venue, but like somebody said a while back, when you think something was X amount of years ago, add 10 and you’re much closer.
So it’s been around for a while. It’s not a place I’ve knowingly been to. What a great size of venue. That’s the one. Anything else has gotten too big. Don’t know how many people it seats, but it’s wonderful.
Grateful Shred is a Grateful Dead tribute band and Grateful Dead-adjacent band, not concerned with playing it like they do, just getting the feel right. I would say more of a kind of Southern rock groove feel with the two drummers.
And when I started playing in this Grateful Dead band of my own, they were the ones I gravitated to. It looks like the band has changed a lot, but the overall feel is dead on, and I just love it.
The mood was great. It’s really hard for me to stay at a concert the whole time and enjoy myself, but I stayed almost the whole time. Three hours. I never looked at my watch. It was just great. Felt good.
The crowd was chill, and the rain held off.
I really do think there should be a lot more bands like this, especially in a town like Austin. Lord knows there used to be, and I’m sorry for making fun of nearly all of them at some point or other.
Of course I was tired. Of course I was this or that, but JD Jr. and a couple other guys went, and it was just a great night.
If they were playing again Sunday I’d go see them.
