Yes, It Is Creative to do the Same Thing Every Day
If you're a writer trying to write more, you could do a lot worse than the AC/DC method. Which is basically writing the same (kind of) song over and over again.
To the naked or untrained ear, it sounds more different than you think, with more variety than you may imagine.
Also, I'm guessing if you're reading this blog, you are, like me, pretty unpopular. But I think there's an inverse relationship to popularity vs. support. So if you're unpopular, you probably have a heavy percentage of support vs. listeners.
So the ears out there are somewhat sympathetic, and the people who have found you that aren't friends and family found you 'cause they like you.
I'm reminded of all this because I made a record. Well, I made 31 demos in January, and I still haven't released them. But I need to, and last week I listened through, and I really liked them.
When writing these, I tried to do only one thing, and lo and behold, it's a bunch of different styles of music.
I mainly only used my OP-1, and through some kind of serendipitous something, they released a guitar amp module for their synth right before I started all of this.
So I recorded drums, guitar, and bass, and put some keys over it, used their effects.
I won't say magical because that's giving myself a compliment, but it was really working.
I returned to this yesterday and, of course, was just thinking to myself, why would I get away from this or not do it once a day, trying something?
But, unlike the listeners, does it all sound the same to me, the maker?
Well, I can tell you after stepping away for nine months, it does not. At all. Only I know that it was all made the same way.
Because out of 31 demos, I've got 8 or 10 songs that are legit. And since it basically costs nothing to drop that stuff out there on streaming, I'm going to do that as well.
Going to keep at it.
So the OP-1 is charged up and ready to make the exact same thing.
Maybe 365 days in a row.
Who knows?
